Description
SDG 5 aims to ensure all women and girls have the Same opportunities as men and boys to education, employment , and making decisions that affect their lives. This involoves addressing the present barriers to gender equality , ending discrimination and violence towards women ,and empowering women and girls to participate in the political and public decisions affecting their lives.
Why is it important
• When girls are discriminated against and means that they will not be able to attend school, they marry earlier in life, have more children, early in life and are more likely to suffer from complications of childbirth, while also increase mortality rates of HIV/AIDS .
When women are not treated equally in society this means they will be able not be paid equally which affects their ability to access health care which can lead to diseases that could have been avoided easily.
How does it improve global health
- When girls are not discriminated against and therefore able to attend school, they marry later in life, have fewer children, later in life and are less likely to suffer from complications of childbirth, while also reducing rates of HIV/AIDS improving physical health and wellbeing.
When women are valued equally for their place in society they will be able paid equally as to makes which allows them to access health care allowing them to extend their life expectancy
How is SDG 5 related to SDG3?
○ Through ensuring ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health, women will have increased be aware of practices such as safe sex and family planning which will help to reduce maternal and infant mortality
○ Through ensuring to eliminate harmful practices, such as child marriage and human trafficking , reduces rates of child marriage and sex trafficking will help to reduce HIV infection rates
through ensuring to end all forms of discrimination against women, women will have increased job opportunities and increased income which can contribute to government funds which then can be used to achieve universal health coverage.

By increasing the number of women in paid employment, women are then able to earn an adequate income to afford a decent standard of living.
• When women are respected members of the community, they are freely able to participate in the life of the community and also have increased choices over their lives .
