Q

What is SDG 1?

A

Sustainable Development Goal 1 (SDG 1) aims to eradicate poverty in all its dimensions—monetary and non-monetary—by 2030. It is the foundational goal of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015. Poverty is not merely the absence of income, but a condition of multidimensional deprivation—lack of access to education, healthcare, clean water, sanitation, employment, and social participation. SDG 1 recognizes poverty as a universal challenge that affects both developing and developed countries, though with varying intensity and scale.

Q

Key targets of SDG 1 (NO POVERTY)?

A

SDG 1 consists of seven targets (six outcome targets and one means-of-implementation target), each addressing different facets of poverty:

Target 1.1 – Eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere, currently measured as people living on less than $1.90 per day.
Target 1.2 – Reduce at least by half the proportion of people of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions according to national definitions.
Target 1.3 – Implement nationally appropriate social protection systems, including floors for all, and achieve substantial coverage of the poor and the vulnerable.
Target 1.4 – Ensure that all men and women, especially the poor and vulnerable, have equal rights to economic resources, access to basic services, and control over land and other forms of property.
Target 1.5 – Build the resilience of the poor and reduce their exposure to climate-related extreme events and other shocks and disasters.
Target 1.a – Ensure significant mobilization of resources from various sources, including through enhanced development cooperation, to implement programs and policies to end poverty.
Target 1.b – Create sound policy frameworks at national, regional and international levels, based on pro-poor and gender-sensitive development strategies.

Social protection coverage rates.

Q

What is SDG 2?

A

SDG 2 – “Zero Hunger” – is one of the most urgent and ambitious goals of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Its central aim is to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture. Hunger is both a cause and a consequence of poverty and inequality. It undermines human health, economic productivity, and social stability. Despite progress in past decades, global hunger is rising again due to conflict, economic shocks, and climate-related disruptions.
