Sea Turtle Tagging Flashcards
What are some externally applied tags?
- Metal/plastic identification tags (DC tags)
- Applied to the skin between the tail and flippers
What are some advantages of DC tags?
- Low cost
- Quick to perform
What are some disadvantages of DC tags?
Animal must be seen again to confirm identification
What are PIT tags?
- Passive Integrated Transponder tags
- Placed in the shoulder of sea turtles
- Implanted using a large bore needle and injector
- Need a transceiver to scan animal in order to get unique identification code
What are the advantages of PIT tags?
- Low cost
- Small pain
What are the disadvantages of PIT tags?
- Animals must be seen again
- Scanner must be present
What is passive acoustic monitoring?
- Utilizes multiple receivers positioned around an area to detect unique frequency pings emitted by a device
The device is attached to the carapace of the turtle
What is an advantage of passive acoustic monitoring?
- Potential for utilizing existing widely dispersed acoustic arrays that are increasingly being deployed for long term monitoring of migratory fish
What is a disadvantage of passive acoustic monitoring?
Very costly!
Are passive acoustic monitoring tags for internal or external use?
Both (kind of)
Explain
What are living tags?
- Creates a dorsally unpigmented and ventrally pigmented transplant of living tissue
- Can be placed in combinations of locations on the plastron and carapace
- Involves the transplantation of dermis of the carapace to plastron and vise versa
What are satellite tags (for sea turtles specifically)?
- Anti-foul tag Attached to shell using fiberglass, putty, and epoxy
- Typically remain attached for 100+ days (sometimes 2 years)
- Turtle must be sanded down before tag is attached
What is the purpose of the anti-foul paint?
What are the advantages of satellite tags?
Post release movements
What are the disadvantages of satellite tags?
Cost
What are CATS tags?
- Customized Animal Tracking Solutions
- Fine scale behavior through video, audio, and internal measurement
How do CATS tags work?
- 3 suction cups attach to the animal
- Plastic tubing runs through tag/suction cups and is [inched with wire and galvanic time release (GTR)
- GTR dissolves in water based on temperature
- Animals = selected to receive tags based on SCL (standard curve length)
