Q
What is a sealant?
A
A filling material that contains fluoride that is applied to
deep pits and grooves of the teeth

Prevents decay caused by bacteria. It works by having a protective layer over top the grooves in the tooth that are hard to keep clean with just brushing
alone.
3
Q
How long will it last?
A
Many years - 5-10
4
Q
Patient requirements for procedure?
A
Keep mouth open, raise your left hand if you have any discomfort
5
Q
Post Op Instructions
A
- Show the sealant using the patient mirror – watch for cross-contamination.
- Sealants are one part of a prevention program and are not a substitute for other preventive measures. The patient should also continue to limit dietary sugars, continue to use fluorides, and maintain proper oral hygiene measures to reduce dental plaque biofilm
- You must have a soft food diet for 48 hours after sealant placement. Additionally, avoidance of biting on hard items will increase sealant retention
- Sealants should be checked at each subsequent dental visit for partial or complete loss and should be replaced if lost or leaking
