What hazard mitigations and safety measures must be taken if DU is found in an AFV clearance task?

A

If DU is detected, a downwind hazard must be evacuated to a minimum distance of 100 m with an arc of 45°.

The penetration site can be decontaminated by vigorously throwing shovelfuls of sand onto the site which physically removes the traces of DU oxide on the surface. Jammed penetrators that have been decontaminated may be removed by a sharp blow of a sledgehammer.

If they fail to dislodge, another attempt at removal should be attempted in 14 days or in colder temperatures, as the metal will be able to contract.

Specialist advice must be obtained for the disposal of DU fragments and contaminated sand.
