Section 1: Variety Of Living Organisms Flashcards
(8 cards)
Features of plants
What do they store carbs as?
Multicellular organisms
Cells have chloroplasts-> photosynthesis
Cellulose cell walls
Store carbohydrates as starch or sucrose
Eg. Flowering plants and legume
What are the characteristics of living things?
Movement Respiration Sensitivity (response to stimuli) Growth Reproduction Excretion Nutrition (Controlling internal environment)
Features of animals
Store carbs as?
Multicellular
No chloroplasts, no cell walls
Carbohydrate- glycogen
Nervous coordination- can move
Fungi Structure Nuclei? Cell walls made of? Chloroplasts? Feed?
Body organised into mycelium made from thread- like structures of hyphae-> contain several nuclei
Cell walls made of chitin
No chloroplasts
Feed by extra cellular secretion of digestive enzymes onto food material and absorption of organic products-> saprotrophic nutrition
Bacteria
Structure
Nuclei?
Feed?
Microscopic single cell
Cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm and plasmids
No nucleus but have circular chromosome of DNA
Some can photosynthesis, most eat living/ dead organisms
Eg. Lactobacillus
Protoctists
Structure
Nuclei?
Features
Microscopic single cell
Nucleus
Amoeba has animal cell features whilst chlorella have plant cell features
Pathogen- plasmodium
Virus
Size
Reproduction
Structure
Smaller than bacteria, parasitic
Reproduce only inside living organism (in a host cell)
No cellular structure- protein coat, nucleic acid DNA or RNA
Eg. Influenza virus
Pathogen define
A bacterium, virus or other microorganism that can cause disease
