ΛΥ. (appearing to soften) σὺ δὲ τίς εἶ;
LYS. “Who are you?”
26
ΚΙΝ.
KIN. “Her husband, Kinesias of the deme Paionis, with whom she lives.”
27
(Speaking to himself)
28
“Hurray! Because I’ve prayed, the gods have granted that I can see Myrrhine.”
29
ΛΥ.
LYS. “Hello, dearest Kinesias.”
30
“For we too know your name well.”
31
“For you are always on your wife’s lips.”
32
And in fact taking an apple, she says, ‘How gladly would I give this to Kinesias.’”
33
ΚΙΝ. (his passion increasing) ὢ πρὸς θεῶν· ἐγὼ ὁ ἀνὴρ ᾧ Μυρρίνη βούλεται μῆλα διδόναι;
KIN. “Oh by the gods, am I the man to whom Myrrhine wants to give apples?”
34
ΛΥ.
LYS. “[Yes] by Aphrodite.”
35
“Indeed, even yesterday, when some discussion concerning men arose, your wife said, ‘I consider Kinesias the best of all.’”
36
ΚΙΝ. (desperately) ἴθι νυν κάλεσον αὐτήν.
KIN. “Then go and call her.”
37
ΛΥ. (stretching out her hand) τί οὖν;
LYS. “What then?”
38
δώσεις τί μοι;
“Will you give me something?”
39
ΚΙΝ.
KIN. “By Zeus, I’ll give you something.”
40
“I have this; so what I have, I give to you.”
41
“So you, to whom I give this, call her.”
42
(He gives what he has in his hand to Lysistrata.”
43
ΛΥ.
LYS. “Well then, I’ll go down and call her for you.”
44
(She goes down quickly from the wall.)
45
ΚΙΝ.
KIN. “Quickly.”
46
ΜΥ.
MYRRHINE (inside) “Don’t you call to him, Lysistrata.”
47
“For I don’t want to go down.”
48
ΚΙΝ. ὦ Μυρρινίδιον, τί ταῦτα δρᾷς;
KIN. “Myrrhine baby, why are you doing this?”
49
“Come down with all haste and come here.”
50
ΜΥ. μὰ Δί’ ἐγὼ μὲν οὔ.
MYR. “By Zeus, I won’t.”
51
“I’ll go away instead.”
52
ΚΙΝ.
KIN. “Don’t go away, but listen to our baby at any rate.”
53
(He speaks to the baby, which a servant carries.)
54
οὗτος, οὐ καλεῖς τὴν μαμμίαν;
“You there, won’t you call mama?”
55
BABY “Mama mama mama.”
56
ΚΙΝ. αὕτη, τί πάσχεις;
KIN. “You there, what’s up with you?”
57
ἆρ’ οὐκ οἰκτίρεις τὸ παιδίον, ὃ ἄλουτον ὂν τυγχάνει;
“Don’t you pity the baby, which is unwashed?”
58
MYR. “In that case I do pity it.”
59
ΚΙΝ.
KIN. “Come down then, my dear lady, for the sake of the baby.”
60
ΜΥ. (sighing) οἷον τὸ τεκεῖν.
MYR. “What it is to bear children!”
61
“I must go down.”
