Section 1.4 Secondary Storage Flashcards
(13 cards)
What are examples of secondary storage?
HHD and SSD
What is secondary storage?
Secondary storage is non-volatile, and holds a lot more data than main memory but have slower access speeds.
What are factors when looking for secondary storage?
Capacity, speed, portability, durability, reliability and cost.
What are magnetic devices?
Magnetic disk drives are read with a head inside the disk drive. Can be either internal or portable. Have large capacities. Can be wiped by magnetic fields.
What are the types of magnetic disk drives?
Internal and portable.
What are the differences between the 2 types of hard disk drives?
Internal: •higher storage •faster than portable •built in •durable, but vulnerable to magnetic fields •reliable •inside pc as secondary storage
Portable: •smaller size •slower than internal •is portable •durable •reliable •extra storage when needed
What are solid state drives?
They have no moving parts or magnetic properties. more reliable than HHD, lighter, faster, more energy efficient and smaller than HHD’s. Also known as flash memory.
Where are SSD’s used?
Memory sticks, SD cards and many laptops, tablets and phones.
What are types of flash memory?
Internal SSD, USB’s and memory cards.
What are optical devices?
Disks written on and read by lasers.
Give examples of optical devices.
CD’s, DVD’s and Blu-ray’s.
What is cloud storage?
Saving data off-site storage system with a third party. It is accessed by the internet.
Advantages and disadvantages to cloud storage:
Advantages:
•can be accessed anywhere with internet
•easily shareable
•no need for backups
Disadvantages:
•you need a internet connection
•security and hackers are an issue
