Section 2 Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is a suspension
A cloudy mixture in which droplets or tiny pieces of another substance are held with in a substance if you leave it out it will seperate
What is a colloid
A cloudy mixture but the deoplets or tiny peices are so small that they do not seperate out easily
What is chromatography
Test used to find if fluids are pure substances or solutions
What type of mixture is a mechanical mixture
Heterogeneous
A solutions is a _____ mixture
Homogeneous mixture
What is a unsaturated solution
When more solute can dissolve into the solvent at a given temperature
What is a saturated solution
When no more solute can dissolve at a given temperature
What is solubility
The maximum amount of solute you can add to a fixed volume of solvent at a given temperature
What is the saturation point
Occurs when no more solute can be dissolved in a fixed volume of solvent at that temperature
What are the factors affecting solubility
•type of solute
•type of solvent
•temperature
Describe what happened to solubility when temperature is increased
For solids and liquids when the temperature is increased the solubility increases, while it is the opposite for a gas
Describe the particle model of matter
All matter is made of different particles
Particles are always moving
Particles may be attracted or bonded together
Particles have spaces between them
Describe the three factors that affect dissolving
Temperature
•makes the particles move fathers they bump into eachother more often and the heat energy is transferred
Size of pieces
•smaller pieces dissolve faster more surface area
Stirring or agitation
•stirring moves particles around and makes the bump into each other
