A
term used in the west to describe the relaxing of international tensions.

A
- a detente policy; coincided nuclear parity with the USA
- held at the 24th congress of the CPSU.

What were the benefits of detente for Brezhnev?
A
- peaceful coexistence was a continuation of marxist-leninist ideology and could be justified
- American compromises likely due to USSR becoming its nuclear equal
- mutually reducing nuclear weapon numbers would help the economy
- soviet economic problems could be reduced if the west could invest in oil and gas and share technology with the USSR.

What were the benefits to the USA and allies working with detente?
A
- Nixon was keen to pull the USA out of the costly Vietnam war, so they needed the USSR to help negotiate a treaty with North Vietnam
- USA had 300,000 troops stationed in Europe that cost a lot to maintain
- The west needed new oil suppliers outside the middle east
- USSR potential huge market for western agricultural and industrial products.
