Section 3: Biogeography Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is Pangea?
The large landmass that included all the continents that exist today.
What is biogeography?
The study of where organisms live
What is dispersal?
The movement of organisms from one place to another.
What can dispersal be caused by?
Wind, water, and living things.
How does wind and water disperse organisms?
Wind can blow small organisms or the eggs\seeds to a different area. Water can float these small animals and eggs\seeds to other areas also.
How do living things disperse organisms?
The organism can eat and dispose of them somewhere else, carry them on their bodies to other places, etc.
What are exotic species?
An organism that is carried into a new location by people.
What are 3 factors that limit the dispersal of species?
Physical barriers, competition, and climate.
How do physical barriers limit the dispersal of species?
Water, mountains, desserts are difficult to cross for some organisms.
How is competition limiting the dispersal of organisms?
When the organism enters the new area, it has to compete for resources and to occupy a niche. If they lose, they will die or will have to move somewhere else.
What is the climate?
The typical weather pattern in an area over a long period of time.
How is climate limiting the dispersal of organisms?
The climate might not fit the needs of this organism.
