SECTION 3.3 Flashcards
WHAT IA S MOLECULE
What is a molecule?
A molecule is a group of two or more atoms chemically bonded together, representing the smallest unit of a substance that retains its chemical properties.
Can molecules be made of the same or different atoms?
Yes, they can be made of atoms of the same element (e.g., O₂) or different elements (e.g., H₂O).
What is a molecule of an element?
A molecule formed by two or more same type of atoms.
Example: N₂, O₂, Cl₂.
What is a molecule of a compound?
A molecule made up of different types of atoms.
Example: H₂O, CO₂, NH₃.
What is the difference between an atom and a molecule?
Atom is the basic unit of an element; molecule is a combination of atoms bonded together.
What does the subscript in a molecular formula represent?
The number of atoms of each element present in a molecule.
E.g., H₂O = 2 hydrogen + 1 oxygen.
What is meant by the term ‘atomicity’?
The number of atoms present in a molecule of an element.
What is the atomicity of ozone (O₃)?
3 (it contains 3 oxygen atoms).
Give an example of a triatomic molecule.
Ozone (O₃) or Water (H₂O).
Name a polyatomic molecule and its atomicity.
Phosphorus (P₄), atomicity = 4.
