What is primary succession?
A series of changes that occur where there is no soil or organisms.
What is succession?
A series of predictable changes that occur in a community over time.
What is a pioneer species?
The first species to grow in primary succession. They also help develop soil.
Tell whether the situation is primary or secondary succession:
An old house was torn down. Small weeds and grasses grew in the vacant area. Over the next few years, trees and bushes began to grow.
Secondary succession.
Tell whether the situation is primary or secondary succession:
An undersea volcano erupted and formed a small island. Mosses and lichens began to grow on the bare volcanic rock.
