Section 4.1 Investigating Matter Flashcards
(25 cards)
Matter
Anything that has mass and volume
Mass
The measure of how much matter is in an object
Ex brick has more mass than styrofoam
Volume
The amount of space a substance takes up
Melting
A change from a solid to a liquid
Evaporation
A change from a liquid to a solid
Condensation
A gas to a liquid transformation
Freezing
A liquid to solid transformation
Sublimation
A direct change from solid to gas
Deposition
A direct change from gas to solid
Melting point
The temperature at which a solid melts
Freezing point
Opposite of melting point
Temp at which a liquid turns splid
Boiling point
Temp at which a liquid turns into a gas
Particle theory of matter
Way to describe the structure of matter and it’s behaviour
Property
Characteristic that describes a substance
Pure substance
A substance that has its own set of unique properties and are only made up of one type of matter
There are two kinds : element and compound
Element
A susbstance that can not be Brocken down any further by chemical means
Compound
A pure substance that is only made up of one type of particle that is created by chemically combining two or more elements
Mixtures
A combination of pure substances
Mechanical mixture
A mixture where all substances are visible
Ex soil
Heterogenous mixture
A mixture where different parts are visible
Ex trail mix
Suspension
A type of heterogenous mixture that is cloudy and has tiny particles that are held within one another
It looks layered and can be sorta red out when poured into a filter
Ex
Salad dressing
Solution
A homogenous mixture that is made by dissolving a solute into a solvent
Ex
Tea
Homogenous solution
A substance where not all the parts are visible
Solute
The substance that is being dissolved
