Section 5.1 Of Textbook Flashcards
What is thermochemistry?
The study of energy changes involved in chem and phy changes
What are 2 foundational concepts of thermochemistry?
- All energy forms placed in 2 concepts
2. The energy unit
What are the 2 concepts energy forms are placed in?
- Kinetic energy
2. Potential energy
What is kinetic energy?
Energy of motion (anything moving)
What is potential energy?
Stored energy of an object due to factors such as inner stress and electrical charge
What is a system?
Any sample under observation
What are surroundings?
Anything not part of system
What surroundings are relevant to system?
Those that react with it
What is an open system?
Exchanges energy and matter with surroundings
What is a closed system?
Only exchanges energy with surroundings
What is an isolated system?
No exchange of energy and matter with surroundings
What is thermal energy?
Sum of kinetic energies of particles of a sample
What is temperature?
Measure of average kinetic energy of particles of a matter sample
What is specific heat capacity?
amount of energy needed to increase temp if 1g of a substance by 1•c
