Define what is meant by a statutory organisation.
A public organisation which has been created by law and which is funded from general taxation and controlled by central or local government.
Give an example of a statutory organisation.
The NHS.
Define what is meant by a mixed economy of care.
Health care provided by a combination of the public, private and voluntary sectors.

A situation in which someone’s access to health services or medical treatment is determined by the area of the country in which they live.

Central - Conservatives.
Local - Newcastle Council.
What is the role of the central government in providing healthcare?
- Develop policies/legislation.
- Plan national health and social services.
- Monitor and audit care services.
- Allocate funding
What is the role of the local government in providing healthcare?
- Assess the need for social care or education services in the area (and health from April 1st 2013).
- Plan and purchase social care to meet local needs.
What are the implications to the NHS structure?
- The NHS services will be opened up to competition from providers that meet NHS standards on price, quality and safety.
- Local authorities will take on a bigger role, assuming responsibility for budgets for public health.
- Local authorities are expected to work more closely with other health and care providers to tackle challenges such as smoking.
Identify the strengths of the statutory sector.
- Takes the responsibility away from the individual.
- Responsibility for safety and security of clients.
- Protection and safeguarding.
- Entitlement for the public.
- They can introduce legislation to further strengthen service provision.
- Promote quality service / promotion of standards
