inconsistent: fluctuated from left leaning up until 1925, then support for its continuance until 1928 and finally wanting a replacement towards rapid industrialisation and collectivisation until 1929.
what was the argument for permanent revolution?
all theories of marxism-leninism assumed it was impossible for revolution to survive in a single country as capitalist countries would intervene soon after. so it was essential for bolshevik revolution to cause a chain reaction.
what was the argument against permanent revolution?
marxist theory was contradicted by events: revolutions of germany, hungary and elsewhere had been crushed, defeat in russo-polish war blocked revolutionary way to the west. 1920s ussr existed as only communist state in the world.
what was the left’s belief for the way forward?
trotsky and left wanted soviet union to commit to permanent revolution, give support to comintern to aid revolutions across the world.
what was stalin’s belief for the way forward?
from 1923 took the approach of socialism in one country, bolshevik russia should aim to build a worker’s paradise in soviet union as an example to the rest of the world.
what was the party view of socialism in one country?
appealed to those who wanted stability or feared continuous revolutionary turmpoil that trotsky was promoting.
what was stalin’s position after lenin’s death?
had established central position in party leadership. lenin’s funeral enabled him to further it: in charge of arrangements, seized opportunity to promote cult of leninism - made funeral state occasion: body embalmed and on display. trotsky’s absence also aided this.
describe the thirteenth party congress may 1924
seemed to offer perfect occasion for trotsky to move against stalin but he hesitated: maybe nervous of causing split in the party. stalin had valuable support from kamenev and zinoviev - protected hm from criticisms arising from lenin’s testament. triumvirate seemed strong.

molotov - assistant general secretary
kaganovich - first secretary of party in ukraine
describe stalin’s relations after the thirteenth party congress
tensions grew in triumvirate, z+k frustrated as unable to control stalin. bukharin became an ally of stalin against the others. at time when party view moving more towards stalin’s view.
