Q

“The sun was white, as though chidden by God,”

“The smile on your mouth was the deadest thing”

“Since then keen lessons that love deceives”

A

(Pathetic fallacy/ sympathetic background + personification) Cold, depressing, dull setting sets the mood and tone for their relationship. Lack of warmth.

(superlative + juxtaposition + enjambment) - loves come across as very forced - love by itself is not enough as by time it went away.

Volta + personification – the speaker has learnt that love = dangerous

Q

“I chose a maid”

“hare”
“We caught her”
“Turned the key upon her, fast”

“The brown of her - her eyes. her hair, her hair!”

A

(Chremamorphism + juxtaposition) shows the views on marriage of a patriarchal society.
The girl has no power or choice = she doesn’t return his feelings

(Volta + zoomorphism) the farmer has no more patience and he locked her. There’s a void of love, lack of care.

(caesura + repetition + exclamative) shows the loss of control and the strong desire of the farmer which is not fulfilled.

Q

“Like a satellite Wrenched from its orbit, go drifting away”

“That hesitant figure, eddying away”

“Love is proved in the letting go.”

A

(Volta + simile - show instant separation, he wasn’t ready to let him go and he lost him too early)

(adjective - forced separation) present participle shows how the son was not ready to leave and grow up.

strong statement - the speaker is justifying him letting his son go in order to accept his pain and feel better about what he did because it still hurts him even after so long.
juxtaposition - Love is mostly associated with being with the person you love and not leaving them.

Q

“The thought of me doesn’t occur in the ballroom with a thousand eyes”

“The decade ahead of my loud, possessive yell was the best one, eh?”

“That glamorous love lasts”

A

Enjambment shows how carefree the mother was before the speaker was born.

Volta - the speaker gives her perspective. Sad undertone because the mother appears happier without the daughter.

(alliterative phrase - highlights that love is nothing if not glamorous)
