What is Shiva?
The 7-day period of mourning that follows the death and funeral. During this time, families cover mirrors, remain at home, and interact with their community.
What is Sukkot and Shemini Atzeret?
An eight-day holiday where Jewish people celebrate the 40 years of wandering the desert after the Exodus by creating a temporary outside structure called a Sukkah and performing different rituals with the lulav and the etrog. The last day of this holiday has another name, and the only difference is the day has no rituals.
What is Simchat Torah?
A holiday that marks the annual completion of the Torah and is the last holiday in the season of holidays, which begins with the High Holy Days.
What are Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur?
These holidays are characterized by Jewish people leaving the shortcomings of the past year with atonement while ringing in the new year with tradition.
What is Purim?
A fun and humorous Jewish festival, consisting of face paint, costumes, sweet treats and the reading of the megillah. People take turns reading the megillah aloud, a story of Jewish resilience to adversity.
What is a Synagogue?
The place where the Jewish community can connect, pray, and study.
What is Brit Milah?
The ritual takes place after 8 days of birth specifically for males where the child would be circumcised and given their name.
What is a Bar and Bat Mitzvah?
When a Jewish child turns 12/13 and they enter adulthood with a large ceremony.
What is Passover?
Honors and celebrates the story, journey, and freedom of Jews from Egyptian slavery, using specific foods and order.
What is Reform Judaism?
A branch of Judaism that emerged in the 19th century and that aims to make Judaism more globalized and accepting.
What is Hasidic Tish?
An ultra-Orthodox meal shared between Jewish onlookers and the rebbe, a spiritual leader.
What is Conservative Judaism?
A branch of Judaism that aims to conserve elements of traditional Judaism but allows for the modernization of religious practices while upholding the Jewish law (halakha).
What is Orthodox Judaism?
A branch of Judaism that strictly follows Jewish law.
What is Reconstructionist Judaism?
A branch of Judaism that is more traditional, ritually, than the Reform movement, observing a full range of Jewish holidays and drawing heavily on Hebrew in worship services.
What is Hanukkah?
This is the celebration of the ‘military miracle’ of the Jews being victorious against their emperor. Hanukkah also celebrates another miracle: after regaining the temple in Jerusalem when the Jewish leaders had only one jar of undefiled oil—enough for one day of ritual use—God enabled the single jar of oil to burn for eight straight days and nights.
What is a Ketubah?
Jewish weddings are bound by a Ketubah, which is a marriage contract.
What is a Huppah?
Take place under a Huppah, which is a canopy that represents the future home of the couple.
What does the groom do with the glass during the wedding ceremony?
The groom smashes a glass under his foot after the ceremony is concluded to show the good and bad things that will occur during the marriage.
What are Sheva Brachot?
Following the wedding, for the next week is the Sheva Brachot, which are 7 blessings that they will say over 7 meals with different people.
What is Shabbat?
Shabbat begins at sunset on Fridays and ends at sunset on Saturdays. Jews traditionally ‘keep’ the Sabbath by resting and refraining from labor. They instead share meals and rituals with family, study, and attend synagogue services.
