What is a seismic hazard?
Any physical phenomenon related to an earthquake that may create unfavourable consequences for the human populace
What is a Tsunami?
Tsunami is a Japanese term that means ‘harbour wave’. It is a series of larger than normal waves, usually caused by underwater earthquakes. The formation of a tsunami is called the tsunami initiation.
What are the four major ways in which a tsunami forms?
Earthquakes, underwater volcanoes, meteorite activity and sea mount collapse
What do tsunamis not do?
Crest and break
What problems do residents face?
Loss of life, mass injury, damage and destruction, loss of power, water and sewer lines
Short term responses
Rescue efforts – Search teams sent dog teams, forensic experts and equipment to help identify body’s and clean up after the tsunami. Infrastructure – foreign military troops were drafter into help – Australian air force improved air traffic control at Banda Aceh airport. Security- law ana order, the USGS national earthquake information centre managed to get a warning to Africa which saved lives. Food/water/health. Shelter. International relief
Long term responses
Rebuilding houses, businesses, schools and hospitals. Repairing utilities such as water, electricity and gas. Develop opportunities for economy to recover. Prevention - activities and measures to avoid existing and new disaster risks. Preparedness - precautionary measures to respond to potential disasters. Mitigation - acting to reduce or eliminate the danger associated with a physical hazard.
What were the impacts towards Aceh after the tsunami?
It helped to end the tree-decade secessionist civil war between the free Aceh movement and the Indonesia government
Were there any benefits after the tsunami in Aceh?
The end of the conflict helped aid delivery making it one of the better coordinated and managed aid programs at that time
What were the measures put in place after the tsunami
They built multi story escape shelters that can withstand a tsunami
