Seismic Stratigraphy Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is seismic stratigraphy?
Strat that involves imposing acoustic signals through Earth and recording the reflected signals
Acoustic impedance
Product of seismic velocity and rock density
What needs to be taken into account when looking at seismic data?
Signal noise, signal attenuation, lack of acoustic contrast, and signal interference
What is the relationship between wavelength and vertical resolution?
The shorter the wavelength, the greater the vertical resolution
What is the relationship between bed thicknesses, depth and vertical resolution?
The deeper you go, the lower the resolution gets, so ideally when increasing in depth, the bed thicknesses need to be thicker in order to be resolved
What is the relationship between velocity and depth and why? What happens to the wavelength?
The deeper you go, the acoustic velocity increases due to compaction and cementation which increases the wavelength of the signal
