Seizure Medications Overview
- Also known as antiepileptic drugs or Anticonvulsants
- Used to treat seizure disorders (epilepsy)
- Some of the seizure medications have other indications , including migrane headache preventions and bipolar disorder treatment
How The Seizure Medications Work?
In general, works by changing the way brain cells (neurons) send messages with substance called neurotransmitters and how signals move in and out of the brain cells (e.g. voltage dependent sodium and calcium channels, SV2A protein, GABA inhibitory neurotransmitter)
- Some of the mechanisms of action are unknown and many of them are not well understood
Lamotrigine (also indicated for Bipolar Disorder)
Lamictal
Levetiracetam
Keppra
Oxcarbazepin
Trileptal
Divalproex Sodium (also indicated for Bipolar disorder and migrane prevention)
Depakote
Topiramate ( also indicated for migrane prevention)
Topamax
Two anticonvulsants also used for nerve pain
Gabapentin
Neurontin
Pregabalin (just used for nerve pain)
Lyrica
