Seizures Flashcards
(21 cards)
most susceptible groups for epilepsy
infants (w/in 1st yr)
elderly w. atherosclerosis (narrow vessels)
1st thing to do with pt during seizure
put pt on their side
recurrent unprovoked seizures secondary to a CNS disorder
Epilepsy
one cerebral hemisphere effected
no alteration in consciousness
***motor portion of cortex is affected, recurrent muscle contractions
simple partial seizures
portion of cortex affected during simple partial seizures
motor portion
one cerebral hemisphere usually originate in temporal lobe impaired consciousness automatisms amnesia
complex partial seizure
in complex partial siezures, one cerebral hemisphere effected in which lobe
temporal lobe
involve both hemispheres
impaired LOC
sudden brief cessation of all motor activity followed by blank stare
absence seizures
compromised during tonic phase
airway compromised
when to call 911
seizure longer than 5min
trouble breathing
continue in cycle w/o breaks in between
things to do during a seizure
- put pt on side
- move items away
- keep something soft under head
* **time the seizure
* **dont try and hold pt dow
* **dont put stuff in mouth
phase consists of \:tonic muscle contraction forcing air out of lungs (epileptic cry) \:rigid muscles \:breathing ceases (cyanosis)
tonic phase
alternating contraction and relaxation
hyperventilation
eyes roll back
froths from mouth
clonic phase
phase where pt is
:unconscious and unresponsive to stimuli
:relaxed and breathes quietly
:amnesia
postical phase
status epilepticus interventions
hang D5W IV
check O2 sats and glucose every 30min
***Airway is priority
continuous seizure activity
very short periods of calm between
greater danger of hypoxia, acidosis, hpoglycemia, hyperthermia
status epilepticus
seizure actions plan
in place until seizure free for 1yr
:either end seizure meds or lower dose
postical period interventions
post ictal
monitor vitals
perform neuro checks
ensure safety
nursing diagnoses
ineffective breathing pattern
ineffective airway clearance
chronic low self esteem
during seizure, dont hang…
dont hang D5W
removes fluid out of cells (hypertonic)
hang NS or lactated ringers
want things to stay in cells (isotonics)
EEG pt teaching
no caffeine for 6-9hrs prior to procedure
wash hair before procedure
food may be consumed morning of procedure
sleep may be withheld prior to test and induced during test
