What is a seizure?
A short, sudden occurrence of symptoms (e.g. jerking, twitching)
due to abnormal electrical brain activity
Causes of seizures
- epilepsy
- brain injury
- severe kidney disease
- medications (e.g. overdose)
- metabolic disturbances (e.g. hypoglycemia)
What is epilepsy?
Chronic neurological disorder that makes people susceptible to having recurrent unprovoked seizures
✅ epilepsy is when 2 or more unprovoked seizures occur
Signs & Symptoms of seizure
- Intense involuntary movement (jerking, spasms)
- Rigid body
- Clenched / tight jaw
- Loss of mouth control (drooling)
- Loss of bladder control (incontinence)
Types of seizures
- Generalised seizures (affect whole brain)
- Focal seizures
- Unknown seizures
Main types of generalised seizures
1. Absence seizures
2. Tonic seizures muscle stiffness
3. Atonic seizures
4. Clonic seizures rhythmic jerking
5. Tonic-clonic seizures
4 types of focal seizures
1. Focal onset aware seizures
- person is conscious & aware
2. Focal impaired awareness seizures
- person not aware + zero memory
3. Focal motor seizures
4. Focal non-motor seizures
