Seizures and TBI Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is a seizure in basic terms
-Large number of brain cells (neurons) are activated abnormally at same time
-like an “electrical storm” in brain.
Full definition: “a transient occurrence of signs and/or symptoms due to an abnormal excessive or synchronous neuronal activity in the brain”
What are the six Common causes of TBI
- Car accident
- Pedestrian and bicycling accidents
- Slips,trips and falls
- Being hit by a blunt or falling object
- Assault and battery
- Domestic violence and child abuse
What are the 8 at risk populations of TBI

- Elderly over 65 years
- 15-19 year old age group
- Males more likely in all age groups
- Users of alcohol and drugs

- Previous sufferers of TBI
What is the definition of a traumatic brain injury TBI
A non-degenerative, non-congenital insult to the brain from an external mechanical force, possibly leading to permanently or temporary impairment of cognitive, physical and psychological functions, with an associated diminished or altered state of consciousness
5 Causes of non traumatic brain injury’s
- Anoxia
- Infections
- Strokes
- Tumours
- Metabolic disorders
5 Causes of open traumatic brain injury’s
Penetrating injuries
- Assaults
- Falls
- Accidents
- Abuse
- Surgery
4 Causes of closed traumatic brains injury’s
Internal pressure & shearing
- Assaults
- Falls
- Accidents
- Abuse
What’s is the difference between open and closed injury’s
Open head injury
= there is penetration to the skull, involves a fracture to the cranium
Close head injury
= there is NO penetration to the skull, where the cranium remains intact
Name at least six causes of a seizure
Drug overdose Not taking epilepsy medication Cerebral lesions (tumours) Cerebral infection Hypoxia Hyperthermia Truman
