Self-check quiz Flashcards
(23 cards)
This is the international system used to determine the rate of disaster risk in a country using data classified into categories such as exposure, susceptibility, coping and adaptive capacity.
Disaster risk index
This refers to a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or society involving widespread human, material, economic and environmental losses and impacts which exceeds the ability of affected community or society to cope using its own resources.
Disaster
This refers to any dangerous phenomenon, substance, human activity or condition that may cause loss of life, injury or other health impacts, property damage, loss of livelihoods and services, social and economic disruption, or environmental damage.
Hazard
What are the factors affecting World Risk Index?
Exposure and Vulnerability (Susceptibility, Coping Capacity, and Adaptive Capacity)
Identify whether natural event, hazard, or disaster:
A low-pressure area in the Philippine area of responsibility that is expected to be a typhoon that will land fall in Cagayan valley.
Hazard
Identify whether natural event, hazard, or disaster.
Flood in an isolated and uninhabited island.
Natural event
Identify which effect of disaster is being described.
During the 2020 pandemic, the Philippines had a sharpest decline in the real gross domestic product (GDP).
Economic
Identify which effect of disaster is being described.
Haiyan was the worst catastrophe of all time, leaving 7,200 people dead or missing. Almost ninety percent of Tacloban was wiped out.
Human/Biological
Identify which effect of disaster is being described.
After the strong typhoon, up to 16 million people were affected. Among them, 4 million who were displaced. Some families had a constant fear every time a typhoon hits in their area.
Social and Psychological
Classify whether the effect of a strong earthquake is primary, secondary, or tertiary.
1. Every time the children of the community experience a slight ground shaking, regardless of the cause, they immediately hide under the table or any sturdy material.
2. Collapsed building and other infrastructures.
3. Limited food
- Tertiary
- Primary
- Secondary
Identify which statement is correct.
A. Natural event becomes a hazard when there are exposed elements.
B. All hazards are disasters.
A only
Identify which statement is correct.
A. During a flood and a tsunami, depth of flood water in meters is the event parameter.
B. In a volcanic eruption, the area covered by the lava flow and the ash fall in meters, is considered as site parameter.
B only
Identify which statement is correct.
A. When determining the exposure to hazards, the physical location or the proximity to a hazard affects the degree of elements at risk to experience the effects of a hazard.
B. Rate of onset pertains to the predictability of a hazard and how much lead time is allowed.
A and B
Identify which statement is correct.
A. Sectors who are less vulnerable have high position in the community and usually the target for advocacy works.
B. Community members whose capacities start from their own ability to acquire material resources are considered under not vulnerable sector.
None
Identify which statement is correct.
A. Managing the disaster risk focuses on addressing the vulnerabilities of the community.
B. When the vulnerabilities of the community have been addressed, their capacity increases.
A and B
A community is located near the a fault line and a lake. It has a well-functioning warning system and properly working sewer system. Determine which part of the community is more exposed to tsunami. Assess and classify whether the exposure of each segment is high, average, or low.

2. Resorts/houses around the lake
3. High density community living in the forest 10km far from the lake
- Low
- High
- Average
Student researchers are studying about Streptococcus pneumoniae, a pathogen causing pneumonia. After their experimentation, they deliberately disposed the cultures with the pathogen in the sink because they want to eat already. What type of hazard is being described?
Anthropogenic hazard - Technological hazard

Most of them are elders and children. According to the news forecast, a super typhoon will hit Makati City and may lead to flood and damages around the city. What type of vulnerability do the sea nomads have?
