SELF-DEFENCE: Learning Intention 1 Flashcards
To know: - the components of a stimulus response pathway - how to describe the components of a stimulus response pathway (8 cards)
What is a stimulus
a change in the environment that is detected by sensory receptors
What is a receptor
a sepcialised cell that detects the stimulus and converts it into an electrical signal
Four types of receptors
- Photoreceptor
- Mechanoreceptor
- Chemoreceptor
- Thermoreceptor
What is a sensory neuron
a nerve cell that transmits an electrical signal from the receptor to the CNS
What is a response
an action taken by the effector
What is a motor neuron
a nerve cell that transmits signals from the CNS to the effectors
What is an effector
a muscle or gland that carries out a response
Process of a stimulus response pathway
- sensory recpetor detects the stimulus
- sensory neuron sends a message to the CNS
- CNS processes the information and decides on a response
- motor neuron carries the commans from the CNS to the effector (muscle or gland)
- the effector reacts
