Q

What is social penetration theory?

A

Social penetration theory is the theory of how relationships develop. It is the gradual process of how giving away of your deepest thoughts and feelings. As two people disclose more information to each other, romantic partners ‘penetrate’ more deeply into each others lives, and gain a greater understanding of each other

A

The onion hypothesis is the belief that we have many layers, like an onion, and that through self disclosure we reveal low-risk information (outer layers of an onion) first, and then as we get to know our partners we reveal deeper high-risk information.

Q

What are the effects of cultural differences on the self-disclosure theory?

A

The hypothesis that increasing depth and breadth of self-disclosure will lead to a more satisfying and intimate romantic relationship is not true for all cultures. Tang et al. reviewed research literature regarding sexual self-disclosure. Men and women from the USA disclose significantly more than those from China. Therefore self-disclosure is a culturally limited theory.
