Self report Flashcards
(13 cards)
Name the two main types of self-report designs.
Questionnaires and interviews
Describe what a questionnaire is.
A set of questions that are usually completed as pen and paper tests but can also be completed on the internet
What is an advantage of questionnaires?
Enable a great deal of data to be gathered from a large sample very quickly
-Cost effective
What are some disadvantages of questionnaires?
May be difficult to phrase questions in a way that participants understand and which gains the data wanted.
Describe what an interview is.
Where participants are asked questions and talked to face to face and their responses are recorded.
May be written at the time or transcribed
What are the three types of interviews?
Structured,
Semi-structured and,
unstructured
What is a structured interview?
Where the same set of questions is asked to each participant in the same order.
What is an advantage of a structured interview?
Easier to gather quantitative data, making it possible to analyse data.
-Standardised and reliable
What is a disadvantage of a structured interview?
Nature of interview is artificial, respondent may not feel free to add or explain their answers. This lacks ecological validity
What is an unstructured interview?
Where the researcher has topics to discuss but these don’t have to be in the same order for each participant, but is more like a conversation.
What is an advantage of an unstructured interview?
Alot of detailed information can be gathered using this method
-Increased ecological validity
What is a semi-structured interview?
Where the interviewer has a list of questions but can ask for more information
What is an advantage of a semi-structured interview?
Likely to be seen as more trustworthy, gains valid results of both quantitative and qualitative answers
