Self-report technique Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is a self-report technique?
A self-report technique involves the participant being asked to explain their own beliefs,
opinions or attitudes about a topic
What are the two types of self-report techniques?
Questionnaire
Interview
What is a questionnaire?
A questionnaire is a set of written questions
To which participants record their own answers
Advantages of questionnaires
- participants can answer the questionnaire without the need for the researcher to be present
Reducing experimenter bias - questionnaires are easy to use
Disadvantages of questionnaires
If wording on questionnaire is not clear
People may misunderstand the question
And answer it in different ways
Makes it more difficult to analyse their data
What is an interview?
An interview is conducted face to face
With participants, and questions
Are asked and answered verbally
Advantages of interviews
They allow the interviewer to make sure
That they understand the question
And participants can ask questions
And clarify anything they don’t understand
Disadvantages of interviews
Social desirability
Participants are more likely to present themselves favourably
And give untruthful responses
