Define a specific population
group of people who share the same characteristics
Why specific populations are studied
By targeting specific groups health services can cater to the needs of people within the population more effectively
What is a characteristic
a feature or quality belonging typically to a person, place, or thing and serving to identify them.
Characteristic example
Prisoners are predominantly young males (91% male and 9% female) and are from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.
What is a need
require (something) because it is essential or very important rather than just desirable.
Need example
Mental health support – support for management of mental health conditions in prisons is essential.
Access definition
Ability to obtain or make use of a service or product
Access example
Rural and remote Australians have limited access to health services because of their isolated location
Equity definition
Fairness, consistency, inclusivity and justice for all people

Define discrimination
unfair treatment of a person or group and can be due to a number of characteristics
Define occupation
Certain occupations carry a greater degree of risk to health than others which can cause both negative physical and metal effects
Define gender
Males and females are affected by different health issues and have different life expectancies.
Define socioeconomic status
There is a strong correlation between socioeconomic status and the standard of health with those in poorer groups faring worse than those in more affluent groups.
Define geographic location
where a person lives and its distance from cities
Define unemployment
the state of not being employed they tend to be isolated from society as they do not have adequate support networks of colleagues and the relative safety employment provides.
Define access to healthcare
opportunity individuals have to utilize health services when needed. The further a person lives from cities they have lower access to health care facilities

A subset of discrimination – it is discrimination on the basis of race.

the ability of individuals to “gain access to, understand and use information in ways which promote and maintain good health” for themselves, their families and their communities.
