What is a static character?
A character who does not change
What is a dynamic character?
A character that makes a change
What is a protagonist?
The main character
What is an antagonist?
Person or force that is against the main character
What is a secondary character?
A character other than the main character yet still important to the story
What is characterization?
Ways that the writer reveals the personality of a character to the reader
What is character motivation?
The reason s the character acts as he/she does
What is dialect?
A way of speaking that is characteristic of a particular region or a group of people
What is 1st person?
Narrator is a character in the story and tells the story using “i”
WHat is 3rd person limited?
Narrator who gets into the thoughts of only a few characters
What is 3rd person omniscent?
outside narrator who gets into the thoughts of all
What is 3rd person objective?
Narrator tells us only what he/she observes the other characters doing or hears them
What is figurative language?
The use of language that describes one thing in terms of another and is not meant to be understood on a literal level
What is simile?
A figure of speech comparing 2 things using a connecting word

A comparison between to UNLIKE things that is stated without a connecting word
What is personification?
A comparison in which a nonhuman thing or quality is given human traits
What is imagery?
A collection of pictures or likenesses made with words that appeal to the 5 senses
What is theme?
What the author wants the reader to learn from the story
What is allusion?
A reference to a statement, a person, place or an event from literature, history, religion, mythology, politics, etc.
What is diction?
A writer’s choice of words, which often reflects his tone
What is situational irony?
Events or issues i the story happen opposite of what is expected
What is dramatic irony?
The audience has important information that the characters do not have
