Send in the clowns - bridge Flashcards

Q

Key

A

8 bars long.

Modulates to F minor from D flat major. The D flat major was used to represent her disguising her feelings, but the new key of F minor could represent her letting go and becoming more resentful towards Fredrick as she is no longer fully hiding her emotions.

Q

Just when id stopped, opening doors

A

She has been yearning for love for so long but then stops searching for it and finds the one she loves who is Fredrick.

Emphasised through the Perfect 4th rise on ‘just when’ to show her yearning for Fredrick.

‘stopped’ lands on the tonic F minor chord.

Antiphonally answered by flute and clarinet to show her mood. They have 2 against 3 cross rhythms which create tension.

There is another perfect 4th rise on ‘Opening’ to show her yearning to be with him and hope for a relationship.

‘Opening doors’ is on a C minor 7 chord to show her sadness.

There is also lots of dissonance on ‘doors’ with the augmented 11th appoggiatura in the bass.

Q

Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours

A

She knows that he is the one. This line represents her hope and determination to get him back and for him to want to be with her.

There is a change in accompaniment here to block chords in the strings, all on F minor with dissonances, to show her determination to be with him and her sadness through the minor chords. The chords are all tonic F minor with added dissonances. They have tenuto lines which represent determination.

Q

Making my entrance again with my usual flair

A

This line could show how she has made a mess of the situation by being obsessed with trying to get him to like her.

There is rising contour on ‘entrance’ to show the idea of entering somewhere but then the contour descends onto ‘flair’, it’s ironic as she doesn’t have any.

All the chords are dissonant to show her lack of flair. ‘flair’ has an unresolved 4th suspension to show she has made a mess of things.

‘flair’ lands on an imperfect cadence, landing on a dissonant V 7 11 chord again representing her lack of flair.

Q

Sure of my lines

A

Represents how she is an actor but isn’t sure of her own life and what path it is going to go down. She knows what she wants but isn’t sure she is going to get it.

This is represented through the diminished 4th interval rise and fall between ‘sure of my’ to show she is unsure of what is going to happen. It’s on a ½ dim 7 chord and there is a lot of chromatic movement in the bass creating dissonance.

‘lines’ lands on a F minor 11 chord with a dominant pedal in the bass creating dissonance.

Tonality returns to D flat major on ‘lines’
