Sensation and Perception Flashcards
sensation hearing vision other senses perception (13 cards)
Cornea
Gathers and filters incoming light
Iris
Controls size of pupil; colored part of eye
Lens
Refracts incoming light to focus on retina
Retinal Disparity
Space between eyes; allows for binocular vision
Horizontal Cells/Amacrine Cells
Integrates signals from eye ganglion cells and performs edge sharpening of vision
Parallel Processing
Processes color, form and motion at same time
Two Point Threshold
Minimum distance necessary between two points of stimulation on skin that can be detected as two separate points of stimuli instead of one
Nociceptors
Pain receptors
Gate Theory of Pain
Pain receptors are “closed” to non painful stimuli (like a gate)
Propioception
Sense of kinesthesia/where your body is/motion
Top Down Processing
When the perception of stimuli begins with the perciever’s previous knowledge and expectations
For example: Previous knowledge of how a car works allows a driver to know the steering wheel steers
Bottom up Processing
Details make up the whole. Perception is dependent on the details of the thing being perceived and not prior knowledge about the thing
EX: someone would see a steering wheel and, with no prior knowledge, know that the holes in the wheel make for easier holding the wheel
