Sense Organs Flashcards
(29 cards)
What structures are in the fibrous layer of the eyeball
Cornea, sclera, limbus
What structures are in the vascular layer of the eyeball
Choroid, pupil, iris, tapetum lucidum, ciliary muscles, ciliary body, suspensory ligaments
What structures are in the nervous layer of the eyeball
Retina & optic disk
What structures are in the retina
Rods, cones & fovea centralis
Why do domestic anaimals see less colors than humans
They have less cones within their eye structure
Are rods or cones more sensitive to light?
Rods
Do rods or cones detect color?
Cones
Do cones have a high sensitivity to detail?
Yes
What are the 2 internal compartments within the eye
Aqueous compartment & vitreous compartment
What are the 2 chambers within the aqueous compartment & their locations?
Anterior compartment is located Infront of the iris. the posterior compartment is located behind the iris but Infront of the lens
What are the 6 extraocular structures?
conjunctiva, eyelids, conjunctival sac, tarsal glands, nictitating membrane & lacrimal apparatus
What is the lateral & medial canthi
Where the eyelids come together
what is the conjunctiva?
The thin membrane that covers the surface of front portion of the eyeball & lines the interior portion of the eyelids
Lacrimal glands vs. lacrimal puncta
Lacrimal glands produce tears & lacrimal puncta drain tears
What is the nictitating membrane?
the 3rd eyelid that domestic animals possess.
How does the nictitating membrane move?
Passive movement only. no muscle attachment
Tarsal gland function?
Produces a waxy substance on the eyelids to prevent tears from flowing onto the face
What is the optic disk?
Where nerve fibers leave the eye
What is fovea centrialis?
A dense collection of cones in a small depression in the center of the eye that is only present in humans & primates
Area where the visual image is formed, sensed, & converted into nerve impulses
The retina
A ring shaped structure located just behind the iris?
Ciliary body
The small hole in the center of the eye that constricts in high light & dialates in low light
Pupil
The area responsible for the reflection of light in aniamls eyes.
Tapetum lucidum
The pigmented area that is “sandwhiched” between the sclera & the retina
Choroid
