Sensory Components of Motor Control Flashcards
(17 cards)
Dorsal Stream
Sensitive to muscle tension, regulate the level of force produced in the muscle, and more active when the muscle is producing force.
Golgi Tendon Organs
Responsible for signaling active, touch, temperature, pressure, and movement.
Tactile - Cutaneous Receptors
Primary Visual Cortex
Aids object manipulation, movement, accuracy, consistency, force adjustments, timing, and distance estimation.
Tactile information in motor control
Posterior Parietal Cortex
Responsible for capturing changes in muscle length
Most active when the muscle is STRETCHED.
Muscle Spindles
Provides information about the state of the ENVIRONMENT in which one’s body exist. Vision, Audition, and Touch
Exteroception
Provides information about the body itself:
Vestibular apparatus
Muscle Spindles
Golgi Tendon Organs
Proprioception
Responsible for capturing changes in head position and movement
Crucial for maintaining posture and balance
Semi-circular Canals
Vestibular Apparatus
“WHAT” pathway
Ventral stream
“WHY” pathway
Dorsal stream
Inferior Parietal Cortex
Ventral Stream
Conscious identification of objects
Sensitive only to events in the CENTER of the visual field
Severely degraded by dim lighting conditions
“What” Ventral Stream
Allows the smooth perception of movement
Involves the entire visual field
Spatial localization and object manipulation
Operates unconsciously - size and orientation
“Where” Dorsal stream
