Q

What did Baddeley (1988) suggest about this store?

A

A function of this storage is to allow us to integrate visual information so that at a conscious level we experience a smooth, continuous visual experience instead of a jumbled set of disconnected images

1
Q

What is the sensory memory?

A

A storage system that hold information in an unprocessed for fractions of a second after the physical stimulus is no longer available

2
Q

What are the three separate sensory stores

A

Iconic store
Echoic store
Haptic store

3
Q

What is the iconic store for?

A

Visual input

4
Q

What is the echoic store for?

A

Auditory input

5
Q

What is the haptic store for?

A

Tactile input

6
Q

Who proposed evidence for sensory memory?

A

Sperling (1960)

7
Q

Explain Sperling’s (1960) research study

A

Procedure:
-PPs were shown three rows of letters for 50 milliseconds and then asked to recall how many of the letters they could remember.
(Second stage) Sperling then got PPs to recall a single row of letters in response to a particular tone
Findings:
-First instance: But they reported being aware of more letters even though they could no longer recall them.
-Second instance: PPs could on average recall 3 items from rows shown
Conclusions:
-Eventhough PPs should remember more than an average of 4 items,it’s thought that the image if each item fades during 50 milliseconds and the time it takes to report back recalled items
Evaluation:
-Pros:
High levels of control
Easily replicated
-Cons:
Lab experiment so lacks ecological validity bcos it’s artificial
Consent is needed
