Sensory Systems Flashcards
(31 cards)
What are the four stages of sensation?
- Stimulation of a sensory receptor
- Transduction of the stimulus
- Generation of nerve impulses
- Integration of sensory input
What is transduction?
Conversion of stimulus energy into graded potential
What are first-order neurons?
Afferent neurons that relay from PNS to CNS
What are three examples of rapidly adapting sensory receptors?
Vibration receptors, touch receptors, smell receptors
What are three examples of slowly adapting sensory receptors?
Nociceptors, proprioceptors, chemoreceptors
What are the four types of touch receptors?
- Corpuscles of Touch (aka Meissner corpuscles)
- Hair root plexuses
- Type I cutaneous mechanoreceptor (aka Merkel discs)
- Type II cutaneous mechanoreceptor (aka Ruffini corpuscles)
Which two touch receptors are rapidly adapting?
Corpuscles of touch and hair root plexus
Which two touch receptors are slow adapting?
Type I cutaneous mechanoreceptor and Type II cutaneous mechanoreceptor
Which two touch receptors also respond to pressure?
Type I and Type II cutaneous mechanoreceptors
Are vibration receptors free nerve endings, encapsulated, or separate cells?
Encapsulated
What type of stimulus receptor are itch receptors?
Chemoreceptors
What range, in Celsius, do cold receptors detect?
10-35
What range, in Celcius, do warm receptors detect?
30-45
What are the only muscles that lack spindles (the sensory neurons?)
Muscles of the inner ear
What are the two tracts of the posterior column in the spinal cord?
- Gracile fasciculus
- Cuneate fasciculus
What are pyramidal pathways?
Direct motor neuron pathways that extend from cerebral cortex to lower motor neurons
What are three places that the vestibular nuclei (in the medulla and pons) receive input from?
- Eyes
- Vestibular apparatus
- Proprioceptors
What is the primary purpose of reticular formation motor neurons?
Maintain posture
What are saccades?
Small, rapid jerking movements of the eyes that occur as a person looks at different points while scanning.
What are three types of epithelial cells that make up taste buds?
Supporting cells, gustatory receptor cells, basal cells
What are three types of papillae that contain taste buds?
Vallate, Fungiform, Foliate
Which type of papillae does not contain taste buds?
Fusiform
What is the range of wavelengths that comprises visible light?
400nm to 700nm
What is the tarsal plate?
A thick fold of connective tissue that gives form and support to the eyelids
