Give the designer intro
As a designer, I would stage my production of Timberlake wertebaker’s our country’s good on a thrust configuration as this allows the audience to feel involved and immersed within the play. This would also allow them to feel involved with the character’s emotions and thoughts like terror, helplessness and tiredness from the convicts. The play is a piece of epic theatre which is evident through the performance choices of multi-rolling, breaking the 4th wall and changing scenery in front of the audience. With my designer choices, i will ensure that they align with the naturalistic style of the play and conform within the setting’s period and mood.
Give the director intro
Timberlake wertenbaker’s our country’s good is a historification based on the landing of the first fleet of the British empire to Botany Bay Australia, which took 8 months for its arrival. It is based on Thomas kenneally’s the playmaker which follows the harrowing tale of British convicts who were subjected to harsh punishments for their petty crimes. Wertenbaker’s play is didactic and intended for the audience to be educated on “what it means to live without hope, what it means to be brutalised and how theatre can be a humanising force. The play follows the story of second lieutenant Ralph Clark who is put in charge to lead a play- the recruiting officer- for the convicts.
