Dependent Clause
A group of words with a subject and verb, but it does not make a complete sentence. It needs an independent clause to make sense.
independent Clause
A group of words with a subject and verb that makes a complete sentence.
Simple Sentence
A sentence with one subject and one verb, and it expresses a complete thought.
Compound Sentence
A sentence made up of two independent clauses, joined by a coordinating conjunction
Coordinating Conjunctions (FANBOYS)
Words that join equal parts of a sentence, like two independent clauses:
Complex Sentence
A sentence with one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses.
Subordinating Conjunctions
These words connect dependent clauses to independent ones.
Compound-Complex Sentence
A sentence with at least 2 independent clauses and at least 1 dependent clause.
