A

Er - for common gender (masculine and feminine). Most words, including animated nouns, nouns ending in a vowel or dipthong (sound created by two vowels).

Et - for the neuter gender

A

A house is “et hus”, with the article coming before the noun.

The house is “huset”, with the article coming after the noun and being absorbed into it.
