Simple sentence
One independent clause only. A subject (noun) and a predicate (verb)
Simple sentence example
-the dog ran away
- the cat slept
-my cat jumped over the wall
Compound sentence
Two independent clauses joined by a conjunction (and, but) or colon/semicolon
Compound sentence ex
-The dog ran away, and the can slept
-the cat slept and he fell off the bed
-I went for a walk and my dog came with me
Complex sentence
One independent clause and at least one dependent clause. A dependent clause is the part of the sentence that cannot “stand on it’s own”
How to tell if it’s a depend clause
-Comparison: whereas, wether, than
-Concession: though, although, even though
-Condition: unless, if, in case
-Time: after, before, until
-Place: where, wherever
-Manner: how, as, if, as though
-Reason: because, so that, since
Compound-complex sentence
Two or more independent clause and at least one dependent clause
Compound-complex ex
-Because he was afraid of thunder, the dog ran away;however, the cat kept sleeping
-because the cat fell off the bed, he ran away, and he ate a bug
-since I ran with my eyes closed, I ran into a pole, but my dog avoided it
