What is settlement?
A settlement is defined as a place in which people live and where they carry out a variety of activities such as residence, trade, manufacturing and agriculture.
What are the different types of settlement patterns?
- Linear
- Nuclear/Compact
- Dispersed/Scattered
- Isolated
What are the characteristics of linear settlements?
A settlement that has grown in a line (doesn’t have to be straight)
It will normally follow a road, river, coast or a valley floor
What are the characteristics of nuclear/compact settlements?
All the houses in a settlement are built very close to each other, often around the central village green or church
What are the characteristics of dispersed/scattered settlements?
- When individual buildings are separated by several hundred meters
- they are individual isolated buildings and don’t forma a single settlement
- Typically occur in areas of adverse physical conditions where natural resources are insufficient to support more than a few people
What are the characteristics of isolated settlements?
A settlement type when one single house is in the middle of a forest/desert (isolated area).
