A

A settlement is defined as a place in which people live and where they carry out a variety of activities such as residence, trade, manufacturing and agriculture.

A
  1. Linear
  2. Nuclear/Compact
  3. Dispersed/Scattered

What are the characteristics of linear settlements?

A

A settlement that has grown in a line (doesn’t have to be straight)
It will normally follow a road, river, coast or a valley floor

What are the characteristics of nuclear/compact settlements?

A

All the houses in a settlement are built very close to each other, often around the central village green or church

What are the characteristics of dispersed/scattered settlements?

A
  1. When individual buildings are separated by several hundred meters
  2. they are individual isolated buildings and don’t forma a single settlement
  3. Typically occur in areas of adverse physical conditions where natural resources are insufficient to support more than a few people
