Define the word site.
A place where settlements begin which is determined by the availability of the most important resource to that particular settlement.

How is it possible for a city like Johannesburg to exist without actually being located on a river?
This is because people settled here because of an abundance of a certain raw material(Gold). The money from trading the raw materials(Gold) allows for water to be pumped from the Vaal(40 km away) to Johannesburg.
Define cultivation
The growing of crops such as wheat, maize, etc.
Define livestock farming.
Rearing animals such as goats, sheep , etc.
What does intensive farming focus on?
Focuses on high investment on small tracts of land and labour to produce a high output.
What does extensive farming focus on?
Focuses on low capital and labour investments to produce a lower yield of resources than intensive farming.
What resources would a farmer use to increase yield( intensive farming)
Irrigation, Pesticides, Fertilizers
Where in South Africa can intensive farming be found?
In the Higveld
Where in South Africa will you find extensive farming?
In the Karoo.
Define the term Isohyet
A line joining places of equal rainfall.
What causes high rainfall in the east and low rainfall in the west of South Africa?
Warm ocean current on the east coast: more evaporation
and rain.
Cold ocean current on the west coast: less evaporation, less rain
Define a trade/ transport town, and what are the three different types.
This is a town that develops where transport routes meet
- Break of Bulk town(change of transport)
- Junction town(intersection of two main transport routes)
3.Gap town(point of access at physical barrier)
What are central places?
These are towns that provide urban goods and services to surrounding rural areas.
