Sexual Assault
Legal term for forced sexual contact that does not necessarily include penile, vaginal intercourse
Sexual Coercion
Any kind of sexual activity initiated with another person through the use of an argument, pressure, pleading, cajoling as well as force, pressure alcohol or drugs or authority
Sexual Violence
A broad term for rape including extreme behaviors such as forced penetration
Rape
Sexual penetration against a person’s will through the use of or threat of force
Sexual Harassment
Abuse of power for sexual ends; the creation of a hostile work or education environment because of unwelcomed conduct or conditions of sexual nature
Stalking
“Stalking is repetitive and menacing behavior that includes the pursuit, following harassing and/ or interfering with the peace and/ or safety of another - This includes cyber-stalking which is a course of conduct in which a responding party uses electronic media to cause reasonable fear or emotional distress” (taken from guide to campus life 2018 -2019 page 120)
2 types of Sexual Harassment
Abuse of power for sexual ends and Creation of a hostile environment (Consist of unwelcome sexual advance, Request for sexual favors, Verbal or physical conduct of sexual nature as a condition of instruction/employment)
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
Defines sexual harassment as unwelcomed sexual advances, request for sexual favors and other verbal or physical conduct (Explicitly or implicitly affect an individual employment, Unreasonably interferes with an individual’s work performance, Creates intimidating hostile or offensive work environment, Behavior is unwanted and unwelcome and might affect employment conditions)
Flirtation VS Harassment
Ambiguous, goal orientation behavior with potential sexual/romantic overtones
Whether flirtation is harassment depends on: if you have equal power, if you are approached appropriately, or if you wish to continue contact

Harassment in School K-12
Majority of reported are peer to peer harassment most were verbal harassment (unwanted jokes, gesture); Many students report negative outcomes/effects (ex: trouble sleeping, not wanting to go to school, changing route to school) Among middle and high school sexual harassment occurs most when boys are in a group, motive to raise their group status
Street Harassment
Unwanted interaction in public places between stranger that are motivated by a person actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation or gender expression
Make the harassed feel annoyed anger humiliated scared
Examples of Street Harassment
Calling out offensive comments, Honking, whistling, vulgar gesture, Sexual explicit comments, Homophobic trans phobic slurs

2 forms of discrimination or bias based on sexual orientation
Heterosexual bias, Anti-gay prejudice
Heterosexual Bias
Tends to see the world in heterosexual terms or ignore or devalue homosexuality; Ignoring the existence of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people; Segregating gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people- when gender identity is irrelevant separating certain groups from others; Subsuming gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people – sometimes, it is appropriate to make sexual orientation and sexual identity category in data analysis – if orientation is not included the findings may be distorted
