Q

Why might have the Archbishop of York be deemed controversial in terms of cohabitation before marriage?

A

He allowed Prince William and Kate to cohabit before they were married.
This goes against the ideologies of the protestant church.

“Some people want to test the milk before they milk the cow”

Q

What are Christian views on adultery today?

A

It is a serious breach of marriage vows.

The blame should be placed equally.

It can be a justification for divorce.

17
Q

What does Augustine say about sexual ethics?

A

Sex not intended to procreate is sinful.

Sex for pleasure is a sin of lust (a minor sin which could be forgiven by prayer or acts of charity)

After the fall there was concupiscence meaning people wouldn’t be able to control their pleasure.

If a partner requested sex at a time procreation isn’t possible - the requester would get a minor sin, but the responder would have to oblige.

(“Do not refuse one another”)

18
Q

What is the Catholic stance on homosexuality?

A

It is forbidden, as seen in the Bible.

Adam was given Eve as a companion.
Homosexual sex doesn’t lead to procreation.
Sexual expression is only possible in heterosexual sex.

19
Q

How does the Catholic church put anti-homosexual beliefs into practice?

A

2005 Vatican banned homosexuals from becoming clergy.

Homosexual people are expected to be chaste.

BUT…they shouldn’t be mistreated.

20
Q

Why do the Anglican church accept homosexuality more?

A

Biblical passages need to be contextualised and interpreted.

Texts seemingly against homosexuality often relate to unequal relations such as prostitution.

21
Q

How does the Anglican church put their accepting beliefs into practice?

A

Anglican churches can ‘opt-in’ to officiating same sex marriage since 2013.

In relation to “Love thy neighbour”, homosexual/heterosexual relationships are morally irrelevant as long as they are loving.

Homosexual members of the clergy are accepted.

22
Q

What is Kea’s contextual interpretation of the word “Malakos”?

A

The Revised Standard Version of the Bible translated it to “Homosexual”.

However Kea found that it was an adjective meaning “soft”, which was used by Aristotle to describe men lacking self-control.

In Greek, it was never used to reference homosexuals.

23
Q

What is Martin’s contextual interpretation of “arsenokoites”?

A

The word means male (arsen) and bed (koite) so the plural version might be “bedders of males” ie men who sleep with other men.

But the meaning of the word depends on its use.
In the Sibylene Oracle it says “Do not arsenokoiten” but this prohibiting is in a context where the dominant concern is with economic injustice and exploitation.
The oracle talks about sexual sins, homosexual sex isn’t mentioned.

24
Q

How is Genesis contextually defended from homophobia?

A

“Don’t do such a wicked thing” (in reference to two men being asked to sleep with the men of Sodom)

BUT…this therefore references sex without consent, as opposed to loving and committed relationships.

25
How does sex fit in with Natural Law?
The primary precepts of reproduction and ordered society promote sex only for procreation, meaning only homosexual with no contraception. This also rules out extra marital sex, masturbation, puts infertile couples into question and also prostitution/casual sex.
26
What are the problems with Natural Law demanding that sex is both unitative and procreative?
It puts the factors of infertility, menopause and disability to question - suggesting they cannot have sex. On the other hand, this view could lead to excessive amounts of children, damaging health. Similarly, saying that avoiding sex would be a sin is also too excessive. The issue is that Natural Law defines sex with one purpose.
27
What is Leiser's objection to Natural Law's approach to the telos of sex?
Sexual acts may have multiple purposes, why should every sexual act have to fulfil a purpose? It could be for bonding, pleasure, fun ect.
28
Aquinas quote on the telos of sex
"The emission of semen under conditions in which offspring cannot follow is illicit"
29
According to Foucalt, why is Natural Law wrong to say that homosexuality is not natural?
Ars erotica - sex for pleasure, companionship and education. Sexuality cannot be defined as a singular sexuality. Controlling sexual practices is a useful means of maintaining power - eg the church. "Normal" is an idea established by those who have an interest in controlling society.
30
How does Pittenger argue that homosexuality could align with Natural Law?
"We do not know its origins: it is present in every culture" It is not an active choice or conditioning - but an instinctive feeling. Being a minority isn't contrary to natural law.
