Q

John Stuart mill + utilitarianism on sexual ethics

A

John Stuart mill - utilitarianism - non harm principle - In his work on liberty written in 1859 j.s mill states that it is no business of the government, society or the church what people decide is appropriate for them with regards to their sexual relationships. As long as nobody comes to any harm each person should be able to make autonomous decisions about what is right for them. The only rule is that it should be fully consensual and no third party can be hurt for example no adultery.

Problems with mil and sexual ethics

A

Problems occour as mill beleives as long as consent is given and no harm comes sex is fine as freedom of expression. However we must be sure the sex is free and informed as infleunce of drugs alcohol or peer pressure are not accounted for by mill

Q

Liberal views on sexual ethics

A

Libertarian attitudes towards sex emphasize personal freedom and individual choice, often aligning with secular values. As society becomes more secular, social attitudes towards sex are increasingly diverse, with a focus on sexual freedom and access to knowledge about sex and reproduction without religious interference. However, this shift also raises concerns about oversexualization, commodification of sex, and pressures on young people.
What does the catholic church say about same sex marriage and the popes thoughts on respect for gay people.

A

Homo is Wrong as you cannot reproduce so doesn’t fall within the rules
Premarital and extramarital are bad as if they are procrearive they do not often bring up children in stable loving families
.one benefit of this view is that there are clear rules that cannot be mistaken

Q

Utilitarianism on sexual issues

A

Homo - utilitarianism = likes private benefit and no harm to others and could be argued gay couples benefit and don’t harm others however some beleive it undermines marriage
.pre and extra - mill argues to act however people wish as long as no harm is caused therefore people can’t cheat if it causes harm but also should not be subject to specific rules
