All aspects of being sexual, including sexual identity and choice of intimate partners. Sexuality changes with each stage of development.
What are the stages of sexual development?
Infancy and early childhood, school-age years, puberty/adolescence, young adulthood, middle adulthood, older adulthood.
What is sexual identity?
How one thinks about oneself sexually.
What is gender identity?
A person’s private view of maleness and femaleness.
What is gender role?
Feminine and masculine behavior exhibited.
What is sexual orientation?
A person’s sexual identity in relation to the gender to which they are attracted.
What are some sexuality stressors?
Reproductive health issues, LGBTQ+ stressors, sexual dysfunction, changing physical appearance, hormonally stimulated changes, sexually transmitted infections, menopause, sexual abuse, assault, and rape.
What factors influence sexuality?
Sociocultural dimension, impact of pregnancy and menstruation, discussing sexual issues.
What are the decisional issues in sexuality?
Contraception and abortion.
What is essential when choosing specialties or places of employment in nursing?
To ensure personal values are not compromised and patient care is not jeopardized.
What is the only 100% effective STI prevention method?
Abstinence.
What are the alterations in sexual health?
Infertility, sexual abuse, personal and emotional conflicts, sexual dysfunction.
What are nonprescription contraceptive methods?
Abstinence, barrier methods, spermicide, rhythm.
What methods require a healthcare provider’s intervention for contraception?
Hormonal contraception, IUD, diaphragm, cervical cap, sterilization.
How many people are diagnosed with STIs in the United States each year?
About 20 million, with almost half aged 15 to 24.
What are some common symptoms of STIs?
Discharge, pain during sex or urination, blisters or sores, fever.
What are the primary routes of HIV transmission?
Contaminated IV needles, anal intercourse, vaginal intercourse, oral-genital sex, blood transfusion.
What is the most common STI in the United States?
Human papillomavirus (HPV).
