BP1 Q2
“For me it was as if”

A

“for me it was as if a switch had been lit… illuminating our world,” by utilising a metaphor Valentine demonstrates how Shafana’s faith has power over her identity and how she needs to be linked with her culture to find a place in this world, this creates further tensions between the two as Sarrinah believes that her cultural values may restrict her ability to re-assimilate into society

BP1 Q3
“Practised on me…”

A

“Practised on me… for when you come to talk to Aatifa about it. [Pause]”. The stage directions of “Pause” allows for emphasis on how affirmative Shafana is on wearing the Hijab, whilst also heightening their conflict as she brings Sarrinah’s daughter into the argument bringing light towards Sarrinah’s dissociation from culture as she fears for as she fears for Shafana whilst also fearing that Shafana will be a bad influence on her daughter and will contribute to her daughter being prejudiced by society.
