What is poetry?
concentrated language, also known as verse - produced through both rhythm and sound
What is prose?
ordinary everyday language
What is meter?
The use of regular rhythmic patterns in language
What is iambic pentameter?
a metrical pattern + unrhymed (words at the end of a line do not rhyme)
What does (iamb) mean?
a unit of speech that contains one unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable
What are the main themes of Petrachan Love?
intensity of love, love is perfect, the issue is that the lover is mortal, anti-sex, lover is melancholy, lover wants to be alone, love is not returned - UNREQUITED LOVE!!!
What is omission?
leaving out words to sometimes even create ryhmes
ex. - heard the news, instead of, have you heard the news
What is Inversion
rearranging words to create new rhythms or to emphasize certain words.
ex. - goes he, instead of, he goes..
What is archaic language?
words that are familiar, that contain different meanings *can be due to context
What is a classical allusion?
an indirect reference to something from Greek/Roman mythology
What is a biblical allusion?
an indirect reference to something from the bible
What is a pun?
a play on words, but really a play on the sound of words
What is paradox?
a seemingly absurd or self-contradictory statement or proposition that when investigated or explained may prove to be well-founded or true
What is the structure of a sonnet?
a poetic form consisting of 14 lines
What does a Shakespearean stanza intail?
three 4 line stanzas and a final rhymed couplet
What is the rhyme scheme?
ABABCDCDEFEFGG
What else is there to know about rhyme schemes?
written in iambic pentameter, every line has 10 syllables consisting of five iambs
ex. - duh-DUH, duh-DUH, duh-DUH, duh-DUH, duh-DUH
What is sonnet 18 about?
speculated to be about a certain young man… it is about love and comparing ones love to a summers day, although the catch is that it may not all be so great, and you can’t even describe it so a summers day because they are too perfect for even that
What are the last 2 lines of sonnet 18 and what do they suggest?
“so long as men can breathe or eyes can see” - this suggests that human life is temporary but poetry will last forever. as long as there is someone to read or say these words their love and beauty will go on forever
Why did Shakespeare use iambic pentameter?
it is very catchy, and used in everyday life often accidentally, for example a lot of pop songs use it
